Retiring CEHS Teacher Elaine Brownell Named 2011 Thompson Award Recipient

Having a CEEF award named in her honor, it was perhaps surprising to Elaine Brownell that she would be named the 2011 recipient of CEEF's Thompson Award. For the hundreds of students and families touched by Elaine's devotion over her years of teaching, there was no surprise in the selection of Brownell for the award that honors a staff member or teacher for their exceptional mentoring of students.
This year’s recipient has always gone above and beyond the call of duty for our children. When we think of this amazing role model, our first thought is caring and concern for our children . . . Her patience working with students until they get the concept is almost legendary. She has a win-win attitude, and the student’s best interest is always at the forefront. We have heard many stories from former students that acknowledge her help, guidance, care and concern and how much that meant to them."
excerpted from remarks given by Nancy Thompson
Below are Ms. Brownell's remarks upon receipt of the Thompson Award, on August 30, 2011:
Thank you, Nancy. I am overwhelmed and honored to be receiving this award. When Tim called me about 2 weeks ago to let me know, there was an emotional silence that followed on both our parts – we both wanted to continue the conversation but words did not coming quickly or easily. So much flashed through my mind – the Thompson family and the tragic loss of their son, Timmy, himself, his wide smile and mischievous nature which masked a very real struggle, and, lastly, the fact that I was receiving this award in his memory.
I’m privileged to know Tim & Nancy Thompson and their family, who, in the midst of their own loss, supported the young people of this community through a difficult time and urged them to look ahead and value their lives.
Tim & Nancy, and members of CEEF, I appreciate the recognition of the characteristics you value in me. I can only say that I represent so many who teach with passion and are committed to the healthy growth of our young people. It is an honor for me to be associated with those who have received this award before me – Ben, Rick, Julie, John, and Joe. I remember Ben Raymond saying, in response to receiving this award – “I’m only doing my job”, and that’s how I felt years ago when I remember thinking – I can’t believe I’m getting paid for doing something I love.
I guess I could say that my passion comes from believing in kids and believing I can make a difference – it’s hard in our business because we never know when a comment or action will change the course of a young person’s life. Whether we are at the beginning, the middle, or at the end of their public school education, we are given that opportunity to make a difference - to watch, to listen , to guide.
I value relationships – As parents, we have all tried to surround our own children with “significant others” in their lives – people they could turn to, people they could learn from. And WE, as educators, are among those significant others - to so many children - daily.
Because of the nature of our job, we may be there when…
the smile masks the struggle and the pain,
or when the bravado covers up the insecurities or the lack of confidence,
or in that fleeting window of time when a student takes a healthy risk, be it socially or academically.
I can’t imagine a more supporting or rewarding role and I have been one of the privileged to play it. Thank you for this honor and I wish you all a great school year."
